In the heart of Atlanta, at Cambria’s Buckhead Gallery, a special one-on-one design consultation unfolded with renowned designer Michel Smith Boyd and Cambria’s Heather Hall. Smith Boyd stopped by the gallery and offered a unique glimpse into his meticulous process of designing and selecting materials for a major project. The day showcased Smith Boyd’s expertise and how he integrates Cambria quartz surfaces into his design journey.
Smith Boyd emphasized the importance of seeing the material in a larger format. “This is main-character energy,” he said as he highlighted the raised surface and depth of the Berkshire Brass Satin Ridge™ quartz slab. Smith Boyd stressed the significance of clients experiencing the material firsthand, as tactile interaction adds to the excitement and value of the design. The full-slab view allows designers to experience the movement and energy the surface will bring to the room, making it a pivotal part of the selection process.
“Design feels like creativity at play,” Smith Boyd said. Among the options selected for his project was Skara Brae™, known for its beauty and durability. “This is a beauty bar in a commercial space,” Smith Boyd explained, emphasizing the need for materials that combine aesthetics and resilience.
Smith Boyd’s selections during this consultation were to achieve a jewel-box effect that encapsulates beauty from floor to ceiling. “Think genie in a bottle,” he added, aiming to evoke nostalgia and inspiration. Smith Boyd’s overall design concept focuses on creating spaces that are aspirational and timeless. He blends modern trends with classic elements, ensuring the design will remain relevant and beautiful over time. Drawing his inspiration from various sources, Smith Boyd incorporates multiple patterns and textures to create a cohesive narrative. His ability to weave different influences into a unified design is a testament to his creative expertise. In this particular exercise, Smith Boyd’s approach to the jewel-box effect involved meticulous attention to detail. He aimed for opulence without excess, using materials that complement each other to create a luxurious yet balanced space.
Part of his process is to use a camera phone to snap photos of moodboards, allowing him to view the composition from a different perspective and make necessary adjustments. He calls it a third-eye perspective. This technique ensures that the colors and textures harmonize perfectly.
He emphasized the responsibility of designers to be good stewards of their clients’ investments, ensuring every choice contributes to a timeless, functional, and beautiful space.
