DESIGN TREND: Design to Sell
Last month in
Design Trends we provided tips to give your home "designer home appeal." The featured projects focused on large-scale initiatives that would affect the overall look and feel of your home. This month, we address the small details that make a big impact. In today's economy, more homeowners are choosing to stay in their homes rather than move, so it's important to focus on the details that help sell a home. The following low budget projects will make a big impact when it comes time to sell:
- Entry Envy - First impressions are lasting ones. The front door should have a fresh coat of paint and a new door mat. A new lock set and well-groomed plants also add detail that will turn heads. An inviting entry way says "Welcome" all on its own.
- Three is the Magic Number - When arranging accents on tables or on a mantle, accessorize items in three's. Keep scale in mind by varying heights with the tallest piece in the back of the display.
PHOTO: This photo demonstrates how a simple, clean design can feel like a designer showpiece. These homeowners warmed up their design by keeping it well lit, using a few strategically placed colorful accessories, and installing elegant crown molding around the ceiling beams and door.
- Floating Furniture - A common mistake made by homeowners is placing sofas and chairs up against walls, which actually makes the room look smaller. Placing furniture away from walls in smaller conversation groups will provide a modern design touch.
- Accessorize to Add Style - If your furniture is outdated, or you are looking to match a wall color with your current décor, use decorative throw pillows. Rather than spending thousands on new pieces of furniture, purchase a few pillows and strategically place them throughout the room.
- Molding Must-do - Trimming the main rooms throughout your home with crown molding shows attention to detail and complements any style.
- Brighten it up - Natural light is always the best, but ensuring that lamps and light fixtures have the necessary wattage is just as important. Increase wattage in lamps and fixtures throughout your home and install dimmer switches to create ambiance.
ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES: ASID Showcase Home
PHOTO: Cambria is showcased in the ASID Showcase Home on the large center island and surrounding countertops in Cambria's Sussex™ in a custom mitered edge. The unique edge boasts a contemporary feel that is both stylish and practical.
Cambria is proud to be the presenting sponsor of the 2008 ASID Showcase Home in Minneapolis, MN. More than 120 interior designers, contractors and architects spent six whirlwind months transforming the old-world colonial located on Lake Harriet in Minneapolis into a contemporary showpiece that boasts a modern design infused with all the comforts of home. The home was open to the public for more than four weeks and was host to more than 9,000 visitors.
More than 290 square feet of Cambria was installed throughout the home in the kitchen, master bedroom, children's rooms, hunting and fishing room, laundry room and bathrooms. Some of the highlights include a custom mitered edge* showcased on the kitchen center island and a chiseled edge on the dresser of the second story guest suite. Cambria's diverse color palette and endless application possibilities were a perfect fit for the dramatic transformation.
*Cambria's mitered edge is available in select markets throughout the U.S. and in Canada. Ask your local fabricator about availability in your area.
CAMBRIA IN THE NEWS: Consumer Reports
For the second consecutive year, quartz was rated number one for being the toughest countertop on the market in the August '08 issue of Consumer Reports. In an article titled "Countertops: Stylish and Strong," quartz was featured as the best product for busy kitchens because of its stain- and heat-resistance and low maintenance.

YOU ASKED... Straight Answers to Frequent Questions
Q: Julie from Cleveland, OH asks: I would like to refresh the look of my kitchen and bath, but don't want to partake in a major remodel. Is there anything I can do that will make a dramatic impact without major construction in my home?
A: Painting is the easiest and least expensive way to make a dramatic impact without major construction. If you have textured or patterned wall paper, or brightly painted walls already, remove it and start from scratch. Going back to the basics with light colored walls will provide a fresh, updated look and won't cost nearly as much as remodeling. If your walls are already painted with lighter colors and you're looking to make a bold statement, paint one wall in a kitchen or bath with an accent color that complements your countertops, vanity or cabinetry.
